Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions families ask us most often.

What types of dementia does Rickeston Mill cater for?

We specialise in all forms of dementia including Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia and mixed dementia. Our three care pathways — nursing dementia care, complex dementia cases and palliative dementia care — cover the full spectrum of needs.

How much does care at Rickeston Mill cost?

Our weekly fee for private EMI residential care is £1,210.52 per week. Some residents may also be eligible for support from the local authority or NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC). We are always happy to discuss fees and funding options in detail — please contact us for a confidential conversation.

Can I visit my relative at any time?

Yes. We operate an open visiting policy — families are welcome at any time. We encourage regular visits as they are an important part of residents' wellbeing. We simply recommend calling ahead so we can ensure a warm welcome.

What happens during the first few weeks?

The settling-in period is managed carefully. We create a personalised plan that takes into account your loved one's routines, preferences and the things that comfort them. Our team provides extra attention during this time, and we encourage frequent family visits. We will keep you updated on how your loved one is settling in.

Is Rickeston Mill CIW registered?

Yes. Rickeston Mill is registered with Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW), the independent regulator for care and social services in Wales. Our registration and inspection reports are publicly available.

What qualifications do your staff have?

Our care team includes registered nurses who are on duty around the clock, supported by healthcare support workers with specialist dementia training. All staff receive ongoing professional development in dementia care, safeguarding, medication management and person-centred approaches.

Can residents bring their own furniture?

We actively encourage it. Familiar items — photographs, a favourite chair, personal ornaments — can make a significant difference to the comfort and wellbeing of someone living with dementia. We will work with you to make the room feel as much like home as possible.

What if my relative's needs change over time?

Because we offer three specialist care pathways, residents can remain at Rickeston Mill as their needs evolve. We adjust care plans regularly, and if a resident's condition progresses, we move them seamlessly to a higher level of support — including palliative care — without the disruption of moving to a different home.

How do I arrange a visit?

Simply call us on 01646 695 142 or use our contact form. We are happy to show you around at a time that suits you. There is no obligation — come and see for yourself.

Understanding Care Home Funding in Wales

Navigating care home funding can feel overwhelming. Here is a brief overview of the main funding routes available in Wales.

Local Authority Funding: If your loved one's assets are below the threshold set by the Welsh Government, the local authority may fund part or all of their care. A financial assessment determines eligibility.

NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC): If your loved one has a primary health need — common in dementia — they may qualify for fully funded care through the NHS. We can help guide you through the CHC assessment process.

Self-Funding: Families who fund care privately have full choice over their care home. We are happy to discuss fees and payment options in confidence.

We recommend seeking independent financial advice if you are unsure about funding. We can point you towards helpful resources and organisations.
